DIY Guide: Re-Roofing Your Garden Shed with Chesterfelt

With all the havoc caused by the recent winter storms, now is the perfect time to inspect your garden buildings and ensure any leaking or damaged roofs are repaired. Faulty roofs on sheds and outbuildings can quickly lead to structure deterioration – not to mention the damage rain ingress can do to the contents.

The good news is that re-roofing your shed is a perfectly achievable DIY project, especially with Chesterfelt’s user-friendly roofing products. With just a few basic tools and our high-quality roofing felt, you can give your shed a professional-looking new roof in no time.

What You’ll Need

You don’t need any specialist equipment for this project – just a few readily available items:

  • Hammer
  • Tape measure
  • Utility knife
  • Galvanised clout nails
  • Ladder
  • Chesterfelt roofing felt
  • Roofing felt adhesive

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare Your Work Area

Safety comes first! Ensure you have a stable ladder and check that the roof structure is strong enough to support you while working. Clear the area around your shed to give yourself plenty of room to manoeuvre.

  1. Remove Old Roofing

Start by removing the timber strips from the gable ends and carefully peel off the old roofing felt. This is the perfect time to inspect your roof boards – hammer down any uneven sections and remove or hammer in any protruding nails to create a smooth surface for your new Chesterfelt roofing.

  1. Install the First Sheet

Begin at the bottom edge of the roof. Place your first strip of Chesterfelt roofing felt so it overhangs both the eaves and gable edges by 50mm. Secure it by nailing along the top edge with galvanised clout nails at 500mm intervals. This overhang is crucial for proper water runoff.

  1. Create Neat Edges

Fold the overhanging felt over the roof edges and secure with nails every 50mm. Pay special attention to the corners – a neat fold and secure nailing here will give your project a professional finish.

  1. Add Subsequent Sheets

Continue adding sheets, working your way up the roof. Each new sheet should overlap the previous one by 75mm and maintain that 50mm overhang at the gable edges. Secure them just as you did with the first sheet.

  1. Bond the Sheets

Use roofing felt adhesive to bond the overlapping sheets together. Press firmly to ensure good contact, then nail at 50mm intervals for extra security.

  1. Cap the Ridge

Cut a 300mm wide strip to use as a capping piece for the ridge. Apply roofing felt adhesive and position it so it overlaps the sheets on both slopes by 150mm. Nail the lower edges at 50mm intervals for a secure finish.

  1. Final Touches

Complete your project by replacing the timber strips on the gable ends. Stand back and admire your handiwork!
